DIY Dandelion Salve

Most people don’t know how useful dandelions can be, In fact they think of them as weeds. Did you know that dandelions contain many vitamins and minerals. Some people eat the leaves, make herbal tea from the roots, even batter and fry the flowers, and much more. With that being said, today I am going to tell you how to make a soothing salve, for sore muscles. I use this on my wife, she says it works well, and has a pleasant smell. So lets get started, first we need to pick enough dandelions to cover a 18″x14″ cookie sheet covered in paper towels. See below

Untitled22 This is what the dandelions will look like after there drying period I waited 5 days, I could of waited 7, but i wanted to write this article.

Untitled34After the dandelions dry, put them in a glass pint canning jar, fill with olive oil until the dandelions are covered, then put a lid on it. Some people put a piece of cheesecloth, and a canning lid. This will also work and could prevent the possibility of molding.

Untitled44 Next you can either, put jar in sunlit  window sill for 2 weeks, or set jar into a pan of warm water and heat slowly over medium low heat. Let the jar stay in the water for 3 to 4 hours, check regularly to make sure there is water in pan, add if needed. Then remove and let cool to touch. Next use a small strainer or piece of cheesecloth over another pint jar and strain oil into jar. Now its time to make the salve.

Untitled55I then used the same pan of water to melt 2 ounces of beeswax in a pyrex glass measuring cup.

Untitled66Now that the beeswax has melted add the dandelion infused oil you strained, I used a 3 to 1 ratio, I had 6 ounces of dandelion infused oil, to 2 ounces of beeswax, this ratio works well. When adding, if mixture starts to harden just let melt again.

Untitled77  Now I add 15 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil, I used lavender my wife likes the smell, and the healing properties. Now poor finished mixture into 1 or 2 small glass jars, and let cool uncovered. .

When completely cooled, your Dandelion Salve is ready for use. I hope you like this, If you have any questions or comment please feel free to contact me on my About page.
